5. Policy Details
The university observes the following paid university holidays each year:
· New Year’s Day
· Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
· Presidents’ Day
· Memorial Day
· Independence Day
· Labor Day
· Thanksgiving Day
· Day after Thanksgiving
· Christmas Day
A university holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday is normally observed on either the preceding Friday or the following Monday. The university may, at its discretion, grant an additional university holiday when a scheduled holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday; see the university holidays and winter recess schedule.
An employee will receive a regular day’s pay for each scheduled holiday not worked. When a university holiday falls on an employee’s regularly scheduled day off, the employee will be given a substitute day off with pay.
Due to varying business needs throughout the university, some employees may be required to work on a university holiday. A non-exempt employee working on a university holiday will be paid for all hours worked at the appropriate rate of pay plus pay for the holiday. Scheduling of an employee’s workdays is at the department’s discretion
If a university holiday is observed during an employee’s vacation, that day will not be charged to accrued vacation. An employee will not be paid for a university holiday falling during an unpaid leave of absence (e.g., Family Care and Medical Leave, Medical Leave [including staff employees paid by Disability or Workers’ Compensation], Pregnancy Leave, Military Leave, Personal Leave).
In addition, the university provides a paid Winter Recess which generally encompasses the workdays between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays when departments are encouraged to suspend operations if possible. Staff required to work during this period may schedule use of the paid time off at an alternate time. See Winter Recess policy.
